Water metering

What you need to know about measuring, recording, and reporting the water you use.

Freshwater is essential for drinking, recreation, cultural practices, farming, and supporting healthy aquatic habitats. By measuring and managing water use, we can protect these resources while sustaining both the environment and our local economy.

Water permits

The Tasman Resource Management Plan sets the rules for taking and using water, including for irrigation and domestic supply. Some activities are permitted without consent, but if your proposed water take isn’t permitted, you’ll need a resource consent (water permit).

👉 Check if you need a consent:  This guide will help you understand how to apply for consent and how to comply.

Weekly Meter Returns Required

If you have a resource consent to take water, you must send your water meter readings every week, unless your consent states otherwise.

What you need to do:

  • Read your meter each Monday
  • Submit your reading by 4:00 pm Wednesday
  • Report any nil readings
  • Let us know if you’re not irrigating for the season or when irrigation finishes

You can submit your weekly readings via our designated meter reading page

Installing a Water Measuring System

Your water meter must be installed by an approved supplier. Check Irrigation New Zealand’s list of ‘Blue Tick’ accredited suppliers on the  Irrigation NZ website.
