The Tasman District has some amazing towns, beaches and parks. Please come visit us!
Freedom camping is a popular way for people to holiday in Tasman. To make sure other campers, residents and the wider community can enjoy it too, it is important to camp responsibly and follow the rules.
Camping in Council-controlled public places, is regulated under the Tasman District Council Responsible Camping Bylaw 2025. This bylaw outlines where camping is permitted, sets time limits in certain areas, and includes other important requirements. It does not apply to Department of Conservation land, commercial campgrounds, or privately owned public spaces such as supermarket carparks.
By respecting these guidelines, you help protect our environment and communities to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
Please be aware that Tasman District Council actively enforces the rules around Freedom Camping within the Nelson area. If you breach the rules you can receive a $400 fine under the Freedom Camping Act or the Reserves Act.
See the map below for locations for self-contained and non-self-contained camping, along with commercial campsites and dump-stations. Freedom camping in a tent on public land is not permitted in the Tasman District.
