Wastewater overflows 02 June 2026
The heavy rain over the long weekend has led to stormwater getting into our wastewater network and overwhelming systems causing numerous sewage pump stations across Tasman District to overflow.
The affected pump stations sites in Golden Bay are:
- · Motupipi
- · Hiawatha Lane
- · Upper Tākaka
- · Pōhara Valley
There were also overflows in Richmond and Mapua at:
- · Oxford Street
- · Sunview Heights
- · Māpua Rise
Raw sewage may have escaped into the areas surrounding the pump stations including adjacent waterways or drains and there’s potential for contamination.
People should avoid contact with any standing water around pump stations for at least 48 hours after rainfall finishes.
But remember, after any wet weather at any time there’s potential for contamination from run-off from the land.
People should always be cautious about taking shellfish from coastal areas, particularly near urban areas, where there are many potential sources of contamination from human activities and animals.
