Update Thursday 16 April:
Great news – Richmond’s Salisbury Road has reopened to two lanes this morning, a couple of days ahead of schedule thanks to the team’s hard mahi and favourable weather conditions.
Salisbury Road, from the Champion Road roundabout to Arbor-Lea Avenue, has had a much-needed rebuild, that involved repairing structurally failed sections of the road, reconstructing sections of the road base, and replacing the surface with new asphalt.
As part of this work, we also reinstated a number of car parks on Salisbury Road just north of Waimea College.
Line marking was attempted last night, until the rain came in, so unfortunately it couldn’t be completed, and will be finished tonight if the conditions allow. There will still be a bit of traffic management in place until this is completed.
Route 2, 5 and 6 eBus services are now back to their usual routes and stops along Salisbury Road.
Salisbury Road is a key transport route for Tasman, and getting this work done now extends the life of the road and reduces the need for ongoing reactive repairs.
Thanks to (almost) everyone for their patience and understanding while we got these important works done.

Tuesday 7 April:
Richmond’s Salisbury Road, from the Champion Road roundabout to Arbor-Lea Avenue, is in for a much-needed rebuild from next week.
The job involves repairing structurally failed sections of the road, reconstructing the road base where required, and replacing the surface with new asphalt.
Salisbury Road is a key transport route for Tasman, and structural repairs are required, not just surface maintenance. Getting this work done now will improve safety for all road users, extend the life of the road, and reduce the need for ongoing reactive repairs.
Work is being done in two stages, beginning on Tuesday 7 April and will take two weeks.
During this time, traffic will flow along Salisbury Road southbound (towards Richmond) as normal, however the road will be closed to northbound traffic (towards Nelson) from the Arbor-Lea Avenue traffic lights. If you are heading towards Nelson, please avoid Salisbury Road and take another route.
There will also be a temporary baby roundabout put in place at the Arbor-Lea Avenue intersection, replacing the traffic lights during this work, enabling residents to leave Arbor-Lea Avenue.
There will be speed restrictions in place, so please expect delays and avoid the area if possible.
Access to homes and businesses will be maintained wherever possible, although there may be some delays and short‑term access restrictions as different stages of work are carried out.
Route 2, 5 and 6 eBus services along Salisbury Road will also be affected. The bus stop on Salisbury Road outside Woolworths will be closed and shifted to the stop outside Waimea College for Richmond-bound buses. This is a standard stop for Route 2, but will be a new stop for Route 5 and 6 during this time.
Nelson-bound buses on Route 2 will use the first stop on Salisbury Road and then detour down Talbot Street and the Richmond Deviation to rejoin their regular route picking up passengers on Main Road Stoke – the other three Salisbury Road Nelson-bound bus stops will be out of action while this work is taking place. This means Route 5 and 6 will also follow this Route and not make their one regular stop on Salisbury Road near Holdaway Grove heading towards Nelson.
We’re doing this work during school holidays to minimise any disruptions.
