A boil water notice is used to help keep people safe when drinking water may be compromised. It may be temporarily or permanently in place.

  • Temporary boil water notice – is used for short-term issues, such as storms, pipe breaks, or problems at the treatment plant. The notice is lifted once water monitoring shows the supply is safe again.
  • Permanent boil water notice - is used when there is a long-term risk to water safety, mainly due to poor water quality and infrastructure limitations. Water must continue to be boiled until planned upgrades are completed and the supply meets drinking water compliance standards.
When a boil water notice is in place

Water supply users in the affected area will be advised when a boil water notice is issued.

Boil water before:
  • Drinking water
  • Brushing teeth
  • Preparing food (including washing uncooked foods such as salad, vegetables and fruit)
  • Making ice
  • Making up infant formula

How to boil your water correctly

  • Boil the water in an electric jug until the jug turns off automatically
  • Or bring the water to a rolling boil (where bubbles appear in the centre and do not disappear when the water is stirred) for one minute
  • Store cooled water in a clean container with a lid
  • Boiled water is best used within 24 hours and can be boiled again to be sure it is safe. This is especially important for preparing infant formula.

For more information on drinking water during emergency situations, visit Taumata Arowai’s website(external link).

Council may provide access to another water source such as a mobile water tanker if your water supply is unable to be reinstated within a short time. On these occasions, you will need to bring along your own clean, food quality containers to fill with water.

Medical advice should be sought promptly if any household members experience illness.
